Layer naming is a waste of time for quick projects

I used to name every single layer in Photoshop down to the smallest detail. Made sense for big client files. But last month I had to do 18 social media graphics in one day for a local coffee shop in Portland. Spent 20 minutes naming layers on the first one and realized I was going to miss my deadline. So I just started grouping by type and leaving everything else unnamed. Got all 18 done by 4pm. Now I only name layers if someone else needs to open the file. Has anyone else found that strict naming actually slows you down on tight timelines?

Can we talk about the hidden grid shortcut in Figma that nobody mentions?

I spent 6 months manually drawing grids until a coworker showed me you can press Ctrl+Shift+4 to toggle layout grids instantly. It saved me at least 2 hours on my last website mockup. Has anyone else found other hidden keyboard tricks that changed their workflow?

I was showing a dashboard mockup to a client and they pointed out my icons had too many details. At first I was annoyed but then I looked closer and they were right. I stripped down my icons to just the essential shapes and now I can finish icon sets in half the time. Has anyone else had a client critique that actually made their work faster?

Last month I was working on a big project at a coffee shop downtown and my laptop just died mid-edit. I lost all my adjustment layers because I had flattened everything like I always did. That night I sat down and learned how to use layer masks properly for non-destructive edits. Now I never flatten anything until the very end and I feel way safer experimenting. I popped into this little shared studio space in Austin last Tuesday for a community critique night. About 20 designers were there, all just showing their work and getting feedback. Finally picked smart guides over snapping to grid in Figma...

I spent like two years always using the grid snap for everything and it felt fine but I kept fighting it when I wanted to place stuff just slightly off. Last week I finally switched to smart guides only and it's crazy how much smoother my layouts come together now. Things like aligning icons to text or centering a button inside a card just happen naturally without me having to nudge it pixel by pixel. I was worried I'd lose all my structure but honestly the guides are smart enough to keep things clean. Only took me one project to get used to it. Has anyone else made this switch and stuck with it?

Can we talk about people who ignore layer naming in Figma?

I swear, I jumped into a team project last week and every single layer was just named "Rectangle 73" or "Group 14." It took me an hour just to find the button component I needed to edit. Come on, how hard is it to double click and type "header button" instead of leaving it as "Frame 42"? I know it feels like a time saver in the moment, but when you have 200 layers and need to export something fast, you're totally screwed. My old boss used to make us rename layers before he'd even look at our files, and I thought he was being a jerk. Now I get it.
