Figma autolayout vs my old group habit, 60 files later I switched for good
Three weeks ago I redid a client dashboard in Figma using autolayout for everything, even small badges and tags. Took me maybe 2 extra hours upfront in Portland, but the last round of client edits took 10 minutes instead of my usual 2 hour fight with overlapping groups. The before and after difference is wild, stuff just snaps into place and nothing drifts when someone changes a label. Anyone else rework their older files to autolayout or do you only use it on fresh projects?
Did you run into any weird stuff with text layers when you first switched? I redid a settings page last year and the labels kept breaking out of their frames because I forgot to set the resizing to hug contents, so everything looked fine until the client typed a longer name and the whole row fell apart. My trick now is to build one little badge or tag correctly, then just copy that sucker everywhere so I never rebuild the rules from scratch. For older files, I don't redo the whole thing, I just fix the pieces I touch when a client asks for a change, and slowly the mess clears up on its own. The ones I leave alone are the finished projects nobody will ever edit again, no point wasting a Friday on those.
