Bleach white test strips on every print run, or just the first batch?

I read on a print shop blog that doing a bleach test on random sheets from a 5000 piece run caught a bad cyan shift on sheet 3400, so now I wonder if the old 'check the first 10' habit is honestly steering us wrong. Anyone else swatch the middle of a run, or am I just creating extra laundry?

TIL my phone screen lies more than my work monitor

Checked a flyer design on my phone at a truck stop diner in Gary, Indiana and the orange logo looked perfect on screen. Got 200 prints done and the orange came out closer to a burnt sienna, my buddy Dave said it looked like rust. Why do phones and office monitors disagree so much even when the file is pure CMYK?

Last month I printed a batch of 24 shirts for a band in Decatur, and the screen showed this perfect deep purple. I skipped the test print because I was rushing, and every single shirt came out this muddy brown color that looked like old coffee. Why did my dark blue print turn purple after a month in the window?

Epson vs every other printer I have owned for accurate color

I spent years blaming my monitor for bad prints, swapping profiles and fighting with a HP that turned every teal into sludge. Then my shop in Columbus got an Epson for a rush job, and the first test print matched my RGB file almost perfectly. I know people love to trash Epson for ink costs, but I ran 2000 flyers on it last month and only swapped the black cartridge twice. The other brands I tried, Canon and Brother, always needed three or four adjustment runs before I got close. Maybe I got lucky with the driver settings, but it made me realize my old printers were the liars, not my screen. Anyone else find one brand that just works for CMYK conversion while the rest fight you the whole way?

Grayscale proofing finally made me believe the hype

For like 8 years I rolled my eyes at anyone who said to proof in grayscale before sending stuff to press. Thought it was just extra steps for old-timers. My print shop guy swore RGB files were fine, now I get why he was wrong

I run a small sticker biz out of my basement in Cleveland. Last month I sent a batch of custom laptop decals to the local print shop, bright neon green and purple design. The owner, Dave, said don't bother converting to CMYK, he'd handle it. Big mistake. What came back looked like the colors got washed in bleach, the green turned muddy olive and the purple went gray. He admitted he just hit print without converting. Cost me $180 in wasted vinyl and two pissed off customers. He blamed my screen, I blamed his shortcut. Now I convert everything myself in Illustrator before sending. Has anyone else had a printer swear they'd color manage and then completely ignore it?

Spot color match went sideways on a local banner order

Ordered a 4-foot banner last Tuesday from the shop in Tulsa that always nails it. Spec'd Pantone 185 red for the logo, but their RIP software defaulted to process red and the proof on screen looked fine. Got the print, it came out as this flat orange-ish brick tone that screamed off the wall. I checked their settings, turns out they never swapped the RGB preview to the CMYK simulation. Anyone else run into RIP defaults lying about spot colors before the ink hits the vinyl?

Used to eyeball color profiles on my laptop screen, then I printed a wedding invite that came out neon orange instead of rose gold

I was designing invites for my sister's wedding last year. On my screen everything looked soft and romantic. When the prints showed up from the shop, the flowers were straight up traffic cone orange. The shop guy showed me my file was in RGB and my cheap laptop screen was cranked to max brightness. Now I check the CMYK values before I even start picking colors. Has anyone else had a print come back looking totally different than what you expected?

Was getting some banners printed at a local shop in Denver last Tuesday and the owner asked how I proof my colors. He said soft-proofing on my tablet is useless because the backlight tricks my eyes, and I should be using a printed reference under a 5000K lamp instead. I designed this sick logo for my buddy's lawn care business, looked killer on screen with that bright yellow. Printed it on a navy shirt and it came out looking like puke mixed with moss. Spent $180 on a color calibration tool and now I hate all my old prints

I used to just eyeball my monitor and hope for the best, but after getting a SpyderX and running it on my screen, every photo I've printed in the last 2 years looks like garbage next to what I see now.
