My 'genius' crypto investment turned into a $500 lesson in not believing everything I read online

So about eight months ago, I got this wild idea that I was going to get rich quick with crypto. I spent hours reading posts on some forum about this new coin, let's call it 'MoonToken'. People were saying it was the next big thing and would double in a week. I got so excited I put in $500, which was a lot for me at the time. I checked the price every hour for days, waiting for my big payday. It went up a tiny bit, then just crashed and never came back. Now it's basically worth zero. I felt so dumb for not doing any real research and just following the hype. Has anyone else lost money on a 'sure thing' investment they found online? What do you do now to check if something is legit?

That club has a brutal membership fee. You pay it in lost sleep and constant worry. Still, you come out the other side a bit tougher.

@jake_mason30 nailed it with that "membership fee in lost sleep" bit. One angle I don't see mentioned is how these scams actually get a boost from real news events. Like when Elon Musk tweets something random, a bunch of fake coins pop up with his name and people jump in thinking they're riding the wave. That's exactly what happened to a buddy of mine with some "DogeV2" coin that came out right after a Musk tweet about Dogecoin. He didn't realize it was just some random guy trying to cash in on the hype. Now he triple checks if a coin even has a real website or white paper that makes sense. And I always look for actual developer activity on GitHub or at least some press from a real news site.
