I heard a coworker say they just keep all their savings in a checking account

We were grabbing coffee and he mentioned having over 15k just sitting there, not even in a high-yield account. It made me realize how many people don't know the basics of where to park cash. What's the simplest way you explain this to someone who's totally new to this stuff?

Honestly, I was the same way for years. What got me was seeing the actual numbers: my old checking account paid like 0.01%, but moving that cash to a basic online savings account got me over 4%. That's free money just for moving it.

That 4% is a pretty nice little bonus for doing basically nothing. I mean, I get the whole "one less thing to think about" argument, but come on. That's like paying a monthly subscription fee to keep your money in a checking account that hasn't changed interest rates since the 90s. You could pay for a whole pizza night with the difference every month. Maybe two if you skip the extra cheese.

Actually, that coffee chat sounds way too familiar. My brother did the exact same thing for a decade, and honestly, the mental ease was worth more to him than a few hundred bucks a year. For some folks, just having it all in one spot they can see and touch without any apps or transfers is the whole point. The stress of managing another account can feel bigger than the interest you might gain. Sometimes simple works, even if it costs a little.
