DAE try a glass weight vs a cabbage leaf for keeping kraut submerged

Used a fancy glass weight for my last batch, but a plain cabbage leaf worked way better and didn't trap any bits. The weight let stuff float up the sides and I got mold after 5 days, but the leaf kept everything under the brine perfectly. Anyone got other cheap tricks that actually work?

Glass weights are so fragile. I had a nice one from a museum gift shop, and my cat knocked it off the desk. Now it just holds down a stack of takeout menus. What did yours look like before it broke?

My friend's cat did the same thing, @wyatt_fox68. His was a beautiful blue swirl that's now just a sharp memory.
