Was reading an old trade magazine from 1998 and found out a standard 6-foot cedar picket fence back then used about 30% more lumber than the same design does now.

Actually had to replace a section of my own fence last year. The new pickets were noticeably thinner and lighter than the old ones I pulled out. Saved some money on materials, sure, but it makes you wonder about long-term sturdiness.
