Vent: Overheard a guy at the hardware store say he never uses a level on his posts
He was telling his buddy he just eyeballs them and they 'look fine'. I had a job in Springfield last month where we had to fix a whole run of fence because the old crew did that exact thing. Every panel was out by at least an inch. It made me think about how a simple tool can save you from a huge headache down the line. Anyone else run into a job where the last guy skipped the basics?

What kind of stuff was he building? I've seen that attitude with garden beds or a shed base, but never with something as visible as a fence.

Honestly, is it that big of a deal for a fence post? If it's just a backyard privacy fence and it looks straight, who cares about a perfect level. Wood moves with the seasons anyway. That Springfield job sounds like an extreme case, not the norm. Most DIY stuff is good enough without getting obsessive.

Yeah, I used to think "looks straight" was fine too. Then I helped my buddy fix a fence where the posts were just eyeballed. After two winters the whole thing leaned like a drunk sailor because the frost pushed the uneven posts. It's not about being perfect, it's about not having to redo it in three years.
