Just spent $300 on a local SIM card setup service in Bangkok and it saved me a full workday.

That's a lot for a SIM setup. The airport booths in Suvarnabhumi will do it for about 300 baht, which is less than ten dollars. You can get a tourist SIM with data for a month for around 500 baht total. The process takes maybe 15 minutes if there's no line. Paying that much in time saved might make sense for some, but most people can handle it themselves pretty easily.

Got a local to help me set up my phone last trip. They knew which carrier had the best signal where I was staying. Worth every penny to just have it work right away.

Wait, isn't that 300 baht for the airport booths? I think OP paid $300 USD which is a lot more than 300 baht, so that's not really the same thing.
