Found a hack for sticky hostel wifi at 3AM last Tuesday
Set up a travel router with a VPN split tunnel so booking sites load fast while Netflix gets throttled, saved me 45 minutes of frustration in a Bangkok dorm. Anyone else tried this or just stick to tethering your phone?

yeah and @riverk82 nailed it honestly, the split tunneling is what makes this hack actually work for real life instead of just sounding clever on paper. here's the angle nobody's talking about though - most travel routers have garbage firmware that drops connections every 10 minutes unless you flash them with something like OpenWrt or DD-WRT first. i learned that the hard way in a hostel in Lisbon where i was convinced my setup was broken until i realized the router kept switching bands on its own. the VPN tunnel is great but if your router can't keep a stable link to the hostel's wifi anyway, you're just creating more problems than you solve.
