Pulled an all-nighter because I thought design software auto-saved - it did not

I was working on a big layout for a local bakery's menu in Tucson and I just assumed the program was backing up my work every few minutes. Around 2am my laptop decided to update Windows and reboot. I thought no big deal, I'll just open it back up. When I loaded the file it was blank. Like completely empty. Turns out I had never actually turned on the auto-save feature in the settings. I had been designing for like 5 hours with zero saves. The worst part is I had noticed that little warning symbol before but figured it was just a glitch. Has anyone else lost a ton of work because of some default setting they didn't check?

Did you try yelling at the screen? That usually works for me, or at least it makes me feel a little better. I once lost a whole menu design because the program crashed and I had been working on it for six hours without saving even once. That little warning symbol is like the universe's way of saying "you are making a terrible mistake" but we just ignore it. The worst part is when you remember you saw that symbol and your brain convinces you it means everything is fine.

Why do you think we do that, where your brain just decides that warning is chill and everything's fine? Is it some kind of self-preservation thing or just pure laziness? I've done the same thing with my laptop battery warning, thinking "I've got 10 more minutes of work left" and then it dies 30 seconds later.
