My favorite drafting chair gave out mid-project, RIP after 12 years

Last Tuesday I was tweaking a layout for a local bakery's menu and the gas cylinder on my old drafting chair just gave up, dropped me a foot in about half a second. That chair survived three moves and two studio setups, I picked it up at a thrift store in Portland for $40 back in 2013. I ended up finishing the job on a wooden stool from my dining table, which actually forced me to stand up every 20 minutes and walk around. It made me think about how much of my design process relies on the physical setup, not just the software. Anybody else had their workspace furniture fail at the worst possible moment, and did you replace it with something better or just adapt?

My buddy had his office chair snap the same way during a video call with a client, dropped him right out of frame. He grabbed a milk crate and a cushion that weekend, said it actually fixed his posture better than the old chair ever did. Six months later he still uses the crate, mostly out of spite I think.
