Just realized my leather conditioner was the problem this whole time

I have a tote that I've carried every winter for like 4 years, and the corners were getting this weird gray film I couldn't fix. I tried wiping it down, different cleaners, even took it to a shop in Phoenix who said it was just wear. Last week I switched to a balm with beeswax instead of the spray I'd been using, and the film started lifting in 2 days. Turns out the spray was leaving residue that trapped dirt. Has anyone else had a product actually cause damage instead of fixing it?
