TIL my portfolio was all flashy mockups and zero real problems, a recruiter in Austin told me so
I was sitting in a coffee shop on South Congress last month when a recruiter I met at a meetup looked at my portfolio on my laptop and just said, 'this is pretty, but what did you actually solve?' I had 12 projects in there, all dribbble-style dribbble shots with fake apps and no context, and I realized I had been building a gallery instead of a story. So I went back and rewrote three case studies with real numbers, like how a checkout redesign cut cart drops by 18% for a local shop. Now I am redoing the whole thing and it is way harder than making pretty screens. Has anyone else had a portfolio review that made you trash half your work?
