The two-page resume I got from a senior designer made me second-guess my whole portfolio

Last week a design director I respect said my portfolio site was clean but "too careful," then sent me a link to a 3 MB PDF resume she'd written by hand for a client. It got me thinking about how we all hide behind mockups and case studies when the real proof is just showing your process, warts and all. Does anyone else feel like an overly polished portfolio actually reads as insecure to hiring managers, or is that just me?

That exact thing happened to me last year. A recruiter told me my case studies were flawless but boring, and the freelance work I almost didn't include got me the interview.
