That $60 portfolio template from Etsy got me roasted by a senior designer in Seattle
I was at a local meetup in Seattle last month showing my portfolio on my laptop. A senior designer I really respect glanced at it and said 'did you buy this template from a trending pack?' Yes, I spent $60 on a popular UI template. She pointed out that my work was buried under generic layouts and fake data. I deleted the template that night and rebuilt everything with actual project screenshots and real case studies. Three people this week have asked me for freelance help after seeing my updated portfolio. Has anyone else had a template backfire on them during a review?

Oh man, that's such a brutal but valuable wake-up call. I actually read an article last week about how hiring managers can spot template portfolios from a mile away because the layout overshadows the actual work every time. It's like buying a fancy frame for a photo you didn't take. Props to you for nuking that template and going real with your projects and case studies. Sounds like that senior designer did you a huge favor in the long run.
