PSA: Had a client tell me my portfolio was too pretty to be useful

I was showing my work to a hiring manager at a small studio in Portland last month. She looked at my fancy mockups and said "this looks great but I have no idea how you actually solve problems." That really stung but she was right. I was hiding behind nice visuals and not showing the messy stuff like user research and early wireframes. Now I include a "how I got there" section on every project. Has anyone else gotten feedback that pushed you to show more process?

You been showing them polished decks or actual work?

Polished decks?" Man I had a boss who made me redo a whole deck because the icons didn't match. We were losing clients left and right but hey, at least the icons matched.
