Overheard a designer say 'portfolio is just eye candy' at a coffee shop yesterday

Honestly I was grabbing a cold brew and this guy told his friend that your portfolio doesn't matter as long as your work speaks for itself. That seems crazy to me. After 7 years in business I've seen way too many people with solid work lose out because their site was cluttered or hard to navigate. Has anyone else run into this mindset and how do you even respond to it?
