Debate: Should your portfolio have a case study section or just showcase the final work?

I spent three weeks rebuilding my portfolio site and got stuck on whether to add detailed case studies for each project or just show the polished final designs. My cousin who works at a small agency in Austin told me clients only care about the end result and never read the process stuff. But then I saw a post from a senior designer saying case studies prove you can think through problems. Which side do you lean on and how much time do you actually spend writing those up?

Doesn't a solid portfolio already prove you can solve problems just by showing the work itself?

Honestly, I used to be on your cousin's side thinking "clients only care about the end result" but after getting burned on a project where the client didn't understand why I made certain choices, I flipped completely. A quick case study saves you from having to explain your entire thought process in every meeting and shows you actually solved a problem instead of just making things look pretty. Tbh I usually spend an afternoon per project writing them up, just a short paragraph on the challenge, what I did, and the outcome, and it's been worth every minute.
