Pro tip: stop designing for laser printers if you are going to offset print

I keep seeing people submit 300 dpi files with rich black at 100% K for print jobs that are clearly going on a press. Did two print runs last month where the designer set the black to just C0 M0 Y0 K100 and the shadows came out flat and muddy. Who else has to fix CMYK builds for clients who think black is just black?

and honestly rich black is way overhyped for most jobs, ive seen plenty of offset runs where 100% K looked totally fine as long as the press was decent and the paper wasnt total garbage. i had a project last year where i insisted on c40 m30 y30 k100 and the registration was off by a hair on the second pass, ended up with a fuzzy shadow mess that took forever to fix. not every press operator has time to dial in perfect registration for a 300 page book, sometimes simple black is the safer bet.

Oh man, the real issue is nobody talks about how rich black builds can actually mess up your registration if your press isn't perfectly dialed in.
