I was reading a book on vintage packaging and the original Pantone 485 red was chosen for a specific reason I never knew.

The designer said they picked it for a 1960s cereal box because it was the only red that didn't look muddy when printed on the cheap, uncoated cardboard stock they had to use.

Wow, I always thought those old color choices were just about style. It's cool to learn it was a real fix for a printing problem. Makes you see those old boxes in a whole new way.
