A print shop owner in Boise told me my file was 'designer clean' and I still don't know if that was a compliment
Last month I brought a 500 piece run of event posters to a shop in Boise and the owner flipped through my PDF, paused, and told me my file was 'designer clean'. I laughed it off, but on the drive home I started going back and forth on what he meant. One side of me says he was being straight with me, meaning my bleeds were right, my fonts were embedded, and my blacks were set up so his press guy didn't have to touch anything. The other side says it was a polite jab, like when a mechanic says 'someone's been in here before'. I've heard printers say files from real designers are usually the messiest ones they get, so maybe clean just means I did the boring stuff right. Which one do you think it was, and have you ever gotten a backhanded compliment like that from a print shop?
