Wish I had listened to my instructor about sectioning hair

Back in beauty school 10 years ago, my instructor Mrs. Pena kept telling me to section my cuts more precisely. I always thought I could get away with just grabbing random chunks. Last month I tried doing a layered bob on a client in Austin without proper sections, and it came out crooked on one side. Had to take off 3 inches to fix it. Anyone else ever ignore basic advice and regret it later?

My first real client job in 2017 I tried to freehand a blunt cut and ended up giving her a staircase effect on the left side. Took two hours with a comb and clips to fix it while she watched me sweat through my shirt. Now I section like a maniac every single time, even for a simple trim.

That reminds me of something I read in a barbering blog about how even the old timers still section religiously for blunt cuts. Apparently the natural curve of the head messes with your perspective more than people realize, so freehanding it is basically rolling the dice. I tried skipping sections once on a friend's hair and ended up with a wonky line near the ear. Never again.
