Unpopular opinion: those expensive 'professional' neck dusters are a total scam
I spent $75 on one from a big online beauty supply store, and it shed black fibers all over a client's freshly styled hair. Has anyone found a decent brand that actually works, or should we all just stick to disposables?

Yeah, I had the same thing happen with one of those. Left a client looking like they got into a fight with a cheap sweater. The trick is to wash it a few times before you ever use it on someone. Hot water, by itself, no soap. It gets all the loose fibers out. After that, they usually work fine, but you have to do that step or you're just asking for trouble.

Honestly that pre-wash trick works for the cheap cloth dusters too, not just the feather ones. Run them through a hot cycle with no soap at least twice, then air dry them flat. The first time I did it I was shocked how much loose dye and fuzz came out. Makes a huge difference in how they handle on the hair too, the weight changes because all that extra bulk gets washed out.

It's not just the fibers. The real problem is the weight. A cheap duster is too heavy and just pushes the hair around instead of lifting it. You need something that's almost weightless to actually remove the dust without messing up the style. I tried a cheap one and it flattened a perfect blowout because the fabric had no give.
