Showerthought: I used to blow dry every client's hair straight down.

Now I lift the roots with a round brush first, then smooth the ends. A stylist in Tampa showed me this two years ago and it adds way more volume. Anyone else have a simple root-lift trick?

Seems like a lot of fuss for hair... does it really make that big a difference?

@susan_henderson It makes a huge difference if you have the wrong type for your hair texture. Using the right products stops the frizz and actually lets your style last. Not worth the hassle if you just grab whatever's on sale.

Right tool for the job makes all the difference though. Grabbing a cheap round brush with those plastic bristles just snags and pulls, especially on fine hair. You want a boar bristle mix, something with some grip but not that cheap nylon stuff. And a good heat protectant is non negotiable or you're just frying the ends for no reason. Once I switched to a ceramic round brush with a smaller barrel for the roots, the volume actually stayed without that helmet head look.
