Rant: burning a client's scalp with a 40 volume developer taught me to check porosity first
Had a long time client in for a root touch up and used my usual 40 volume developer without checking her porosity first, and within 15 minutes she was complaining about a burning feeling on her crown. I rinsed her fast and the scalp was fine, but it scared me enough that now I always test porosity with a spray of water before I mix anything. Does anyone else do a water test on every single client or is that overkill for regulars?

The burning was probably not just about porosity though, since 40 volume on a root touch up is already really strong for most scalps. Porosity affects how fast the hair takes color, but the tingle and burn has more to do with how sensitive her scalp is that day and how long the developer sits on skin. A water test is still a smart habit, and so is dropping to 20 volume for touch ups unless she's covering grays that won't budge.
