Overheard a client in my chair mention her stylist uses a different developer for her roots and ends

She said her color lasts way longer now, like a full 8 weeks without a touch-up. I tried it on a client last week with a 20 volume at the root and 10 on the mid-lengths, and the result was super even. Do you all ever adjust developer strength through the hair like that?

Wait she really gets 8 whole weeks without a touch up? That's wild, my clients are usually fading bad by week 5 or 6. I've messed with mixing developers before but never thought to do roots and ends separate in one service. Makes total sense though, the roots need more lift. Gonna have to try this on my next color client for sure.

Remembered a client who insisted her box dye was "basically professional grade." Tried to match it and the ends turned this weird greenish gray. Had to do a full color correction with two different formulas, one for the band of old dye and another for her natural roots. Took forever but taught me to always ask what they used at home, even if they swear it's just a rinse.
