Overheard a client call my balayage 'basic' while I was mixing toner

I was in the back room getting a 9V bowl ready for a client last Tuesday, and I heard her friend say 'that sun-kissed look is so over, everyone has it now'. It made me pause because I worked hard on that custom blend. Made me think, are we just chasing trends or actually listening to what makes each person feel good? How do you handle it when a client's crew throws shade about your work?

Ugh, that's the worst. A client's friend called my perfectly blended highlights "stripy" once, loud enough for me to hear from the shampoo bowl. It took everything not to walk over and explain the technique. People don't get that a popular style is popular for a reason, it looks good. They just want to sound cool by hating on it. Your custom blend was probably perfect for her. Some folks can't tell good work from a trend.

What makes someone think their unasked for opinion on a technical craft is helpful? It's not just about not knowing the work, it's about choosing to be rude while someone is providing a service. That friend wanted to feel superior, not give real feedback. They probably don't know the first thing about color theory or placement. The real skill is in making a style look effortless, and some people mistake that effortlessness for being simple or badly done.

Stripey" though... do they even know what a foil looks like?
