Learned I was using way too much developer after a salon visit in Portland
I always mixed my color with 40 volume developer because I thought it lifted faster and that was better. Then I watched a stylist at the Pearl District Aveda do a foil with 20 volume and get the same result in one pass. She told me I was damaging hair for no reason and now I stick to 20 volume for gray coverage. Has anyone else cut back on developer strength and seen better results?

Man, that's wild! Reminds me of the time I tried to save money by using bargain bin hair dye from the grocery store. Turned my hair a weird orange-yellow, like a traffic cone. My wife still won't let me forget it, every time we drive past a construction zone she cracks a joke.

My stylist in the Pearl District actually told me the same thing after I fried my hair with 40 volume for years. But here's the thing, I switched to 20 volume and ended up with patchy coverage on my grays around the temples. Had to go back and do touch ups way more often which kinda defeats the purpose of saving damage. I'm not totally convinced it's that simple for everyone especially if you have stubborn grays like me.
