I think balayage is overrated and a stylist at the Dallas show last month agreed with me
I was at the Lone Star beauty expo in Dallas three weeks ago and overheard two stylists in line for coffee saying every new client walks in asking for balayage without knowing what it even is. One of them said she has done 60 balayage appointments this year and maybe 10 of them actually needed that technique over a good foil highlight. I get it, it looks great on Instagram, but we push it like it is the only dimensional color option and then spend twice the chair time on a grow out that looks rough in 8 weeks. Foils still give cleaner lift on most bases and I will die on that hill. Anybody here actually tracking how many balayage clients come back for a correction within 3 months?
This reminds me of how people latch onto whatever is trending on social media without stopping to ask if it fits their actual situation. Same thing happens with haircuts, clothes, even workout plans. Somebody sees a pretty picture and suddenly that's the only option that exists in their mind. The stylists are the ones who have to deal with the aftermath, and it sounds like a lot of them are just too polite or too worried about losing the booking to push back. Customers getting led into services that do not suit them is a pattern way bigger than just hair.
