I heard a client say her old stylist never used a heat protectant
She was in my chair for a color correction and mentioned her previous stylist told her heat protectant spray was just a gimmick to sell more product... I was honestly shocked. I explained that on a 400 degree flat iron, that spray is the only thing keeping her cuticle from frying. I see the damage from skipped steps like that every single week. It takes one client with severe breakage to prove how wrong that advice is. How do you guys handle clients coming in with bad habits from past stylists?

Did you see that article about how heat damage is the number one cause of breakage they see in salons? It's wild that a pro would call protectant a gimmick.

Man, @michaelcoleman, that's crazy. People forget that heat protectants aren't just for flat irons. Think about a regular blow dryer on high heat, day after day. That's slow cooking your hair. A stylist might skip it for a specific style, but telling clients it's a gimmick? That's like saying sunscreen is a gimmick because you don't get a sunburn every single time. It's about preventing the slow damage you don't see until your hair just snaps off.

Started using a thermal protectant spray about two years ago and my hair stopped breaking off at the ends. Can't imagine skipping it now and if a pro called it a gimmick I'd be looking for a new stylist.
