I finally realized why my clients' at-home color fades so fast
I asked three people this week and they all said they wash their hair with hot water right after a fresh dye job. That strips the cuticle before the color can fully set, which explains the brassiness I keep seeing. Anyone have a good script for explaining this without sounding like I'm scolding them?

Strips the cuticle before the color can set" is such a good way to put it. Do you tell them to use cold water, or just warn them off hot?

Cold water? I mean, I try to tell them, but I'm the guy who forgets and takes a lava-hot shower the next day. My own hair color fades so fast it's basically a warning sign for my clients. Maybe they see my washed-out blue and think, yeah, maybe listen to the guy about the water temp.

Strips the cuticle before the color can set" yep thats exactly it. I've been doing hair for like 15 years now and hot water is the number one thing that ruins my work. I tell clients straight up cold water for the first 3 washes is non negotiable. After that warm is okay but keep it quick. The worst is when someone comes back in 2 weeks looking like they never got color done and im like "did you take a hot shower?" and they always say yes. I make them promise to rinse with cold at least until the water runs clear. It makes a huge difference.
