Had a Thursday last month where every single perm turned out perfect
I usually hate doing perms. They smell, they take forever, and half the time the client complains it's too curly or not curly enough. But on this random Thursday I had three perm appointments back to back. First one was a 65 year old lady who wanted soft waves. Second was a teenager going for those big 90s curls. Third was a guy with super straight Asian hair who wanted volume. All three came out exactly like the inspiration photos. No rewraps, no damage, no complaints. Made me question if I actually know what I'm doing or if I just got lucky. Has anyone else had a mystery day where your hands just worked?

That 65 year old lady wanting soft waves though, that part actually makes me pause. You said she wanted soft waves but perms don't really do soft waves on their own. The rods determine the curl size. If you used big rods and wrapped properly, sure. But soft waves on older hair that's already fragile usually requires a very loose wrap and short processing time. If they came out perfect, you likely used grey hair perm solution which is different from regular perm solution. The teenage client getting 90s curls though, that's a different chemical process depending on how tight you wanted them. I'm not trying to knock your day, honestly it sounds amazing. Just saying those two perms are pretty different techniques and solutions, so make sure you're matching the right perm for the hair type and curl pattern. The guy with Asian hair wanting volume, that one is tricky because the cuticle is thicker. Bottom line, sounds like you really nailed all three, which is rare. Just double check your perm solutions next time to make sure they're actually right for each client.

Gotta disagree with @ben_shah93 on some of this. Soft waves on older hair? Yeah it's possible. Done it myself. You just need the right rod size and a gentle wrap. Grey hair perm solution exists for a reason. That part I agree with. But saying those two perms are totally different processes? Not really. Both use rods and solution. Just different timing and tension. The Asian hair part is spot on though. Thick cuticle is a pain. Bottom line you nailed it mostly, but don't overthink the technique.
