Finally tried sectioning by density instead of just by shape
I used to always do the classic 4 quadrant section for any haircut, but I kept getting weird bulk in my layers on thicker clients. Last month a client with super dense, coarse hair sat in my chair. I split her hair into 6 sections based on where the density was heaviest at the crown and nape. It took a few extra minutes but the weight distribution was way more even. No random chunky spots or weird shelf lines. Has anyone else tried adjusting section size for density instead of just going straight down the middle?

Been doing this for a few years now and it's a total game changer for thick hair. You really gotta feel the hair first before you start cutting, not just follow some standard pattern. Splitting into extra sections based on where the density is saves so much time fixing mistakes later. I learned the hard way after too many haircuts that looked fine dry but fell apart when the client washed it. Now I always check density with my fingers first, then section accordingly. Makes the layering so much smoother and clients notice the difference.

Is overthinking haircuts really that necessary or is it just hair?
