My architect insisted on a 4-inch spray foam budget for my Colorado build, but I went with 2 inches to save cash.
The first winter my heating bill was over $400 a month and I had condensation issues. Anyone in a cold climate regret skimping on insulation?

My uncle did the same thing with his garage conversion in Minnesota. He saved maybe two grand upfront and now complains every February about the ice forming on the inside of the windows. It feels like a lot of home projects are like that, you pay the cost either way. You either pay it at the start for the right materials, or you pay it forever in higher bills and weird problems. That initial savings just turns into a monthly fee you can't cancel.

Our basement reno in Michigan taught me the same lesson, @nancy3. We skipped proper insulation to save $1500 and spent triple that on a dehumidifier and extra heat in three years. Cutting corners just moves the cost down the road.
