Vent: A guy at a Sacramento print shop said my teal and rust palette was 'outdated' and now I can't unhear it
I was standing at the counter at a small print shop in Sacramento about 3 weeks ago, picking up some flyers I had designed with a teal, rust, and cream palette that I really liked. The older guy behind the counter glanced at the proof and just said 'that teal and rust thing is very 2015, huh' and handed me the stack. Part of me thinks he was right, that those warm retro combos are everywhere now and starting to feel tired. But the other part thinks a palette doesn't need to be trendy to work well, and honestly his own shop was painted gray and orange so who is he to judge. Where do you all land on this, do you swap out palettes once they start showing up everywhere, or do you keep what fits the project even if someone calls it dated?

That print shop guy would have a field day with my stuff. I did a whole branding project last spring with sage green and terracotta because the client's shop had those colors in the tile floor, and her cousin told her it looked like every wedding invitation from 2019. She almost made me redo the whole thing. I talked her off the ledge by printing one menu in the palette and one in plain black and white, and she picked the "dated" one in about two seconds. Funny how a palette stops feeling tired when it's actually on the thing you're selling. His gray and orange shop says plenty too. What did you end up doing with the flyers?
