Just realized my 'bold' palettes were actually just loud and clashing after a client in Chicago called them 'visually aggressive'.
Now I start with a single base color from a photo or fabric swatch and build out from there, so has anyone else had a client totally reframe how you approach color balance?

I really like schmidt.blake's phrase about colors feeling "anxious." That's such a perfect word for it. How do you actually figure out which color in a palette is causing that feeling though? Because I can look at a room and know something feels off, but pinning down exactly which hue is the troublemaker takes me forever. Do you start by checking the main color first or the accent one?

That "anxious" comment is a great way to put it. I took the 60-30-10 rule a step further and now I literally squint at my screen. If one color jumps out too much when everything's blurry, I know it's the anxious part that needs to be toned down.

A client in Portland once told me my colors felt "anxious." I started using a 60-30-10 rule as a gut check, and it honestly saved me from myself.
