Just realized I was picking accent colors wrong for 2 years

I used to always grab the color directly across from my base on the color wheel as an accent. That worked okay but felt way too intense for most jobs. Then I tried shifting one step to the left or right of that direct opposite color instead. For a blue base I used a yellow-orange accent instead of pure orange and it blended way nicer without screaming at you. Has anyone else tried this offset approach or do you stick with direct complements?

The 30 degree offset rule is actually backed by color science, not just preference. Direct complements vibrate against each other because they max out contrast, while a split complementary still reads as harmonious but lets your eye relax.

Does that mean warm split complements (like red-orange-yellow) are naturally more calming than cool ones?
