Guy on Reddit said my teal and orange palette was too basic

He told me to go with a split complementary scheme instead. Tried it on a landing page and now the bounce rate is way lower. Has anyone else had random internet advice actually fix their work?

Wait, isn't split complementary just a fancy term for the same basic color wheel trick but with one extra step? Teal and orange works cause it's high contrast and bold, split complementary is more like playing it safe with a softer look.

Is it weird when an online stranger's color advice actually works better than what you learned in school?

Right, but split complementary sounds fancy but honestly that's just a color wheel trick they teach in first year design. I know because I had to learn it the hard way after ignoring it for years. Teal and orange is a classic for a reason though, it works because they're opposite on the wheel and high contrast. Split complementary is just a safer bet when you're trying not to overwhelm people with too much pop. The real test is if your bounce rate stays down after a week, not just the first day.
