Blew $80 on a fancy color checker kit, then my phone camera fixed my problem

Last month I kept fighting with a teal that looked perfect on my monitor but came out muddy on every test print. So I dropped $80 on one of those hardware color calibration sets with the target cards and the little light meter thing. I spent a whole afternoon photographing swatches and building profiles in my editing app. Then my friend just held up a plain white paper next to the screen and her phone to match the ambient light. That single trick got me closer to true color than that whole kit did. I feel dumb but I want to warn anyone else staring at a pricey gadget. Has anyone found a cheap workaround that beats the expensive tools for print matching?

Honestly, I gotta disagree. The paper trick helps with your screen brightness, but it won't fix profile math when your ink and paper combo is the real culprit. The kit feels overpriced, sure, but it's the only thing that saved my butt on client stuff where "close enough" gets you fired.
