Blew 3 hours on a client logo because I had my monitor brightness maxed out

I was sitting at my desk last Tuesday trying to match a deep burgundy for a bakery brand and kept getting this weird washed out pink on screen. My print samples looked totally different every time I held them up. Turns out my monitor was cranked to 100% brightness for years because I thought brighter meant more accurate. How do you guys calibrate your screens without spending $300 on a calibrator?

People crank everything to max and think that's how it's supposed to work.
