Appreciation post: a regular at my bar pointed at my chalkboard menu and said the colors make his eyes jump
So I do the chalkboard menu at the dive bar where I work, and I've always just picked colors that look cool to me, like teal on black, purple on black, whatever. A regular named Dale, who it turns out did signage for a grocery chain for like 20 years, watched me redo the happy hour board on a slow Tuesday and told me the problem: every line was fighting the line above it because I had no order to the colors, just vibes. He said pick two colors, use one for the food, one for the prices, and keep them the same all the way down. Took me maybe 15 minutes to redo it that way and the whole board suddenly read like a sign instead of a art project. I tested it on a few people that night by asking what the wing price was without looking for too long, and every single one nailed it. Now I'm second guessing every other board in the bar, and I want to redo them all but I don't know if I should go light text on dark board or dark text on light board for a room that's dim. Have any of you done chalkboard or menu boards, and does a two color rule actually hold up or am I overthinking it?
