Switched my grinder from a blade to a burr 4 months ago and my morning cup is a totally different drink
I used the same cheap blade grinder for almost 3 years because I figured coffee was coffee and the machine did not matter that much. Back in March my buddy handed me his old hand burr grinder since he upgraded, and I almost did not take it. The first week was rough, mostly because grinding by hand at 6am is a workout and I was getting weird uneven cups while I figured out the right setting. By week 3 something clicked and the same beans I had been drinking suddenly tasted sweet instead of bitter, with way less of that gritty sludge at the bottom of my mug. I even tested it side by side one Saturday, same beans, same pour over, and the blade ground cup tasted flat and muddy next to it. My grocery bill for coffee actually went down a bit because I stopped dumping beans trying to fix bad cups. Now I am curious how many of you made the switch and what setting you landed on, because I am still tweaking mine for darker roasts.
Did you notice how the same thing happens with so many everyday tools, where we just accept the bad version until someone hands us a better one? It's funny how much of life is like that, we don't know what we're missing until we try it.
