My barista buddy's one comment ruined pour over for me, then fixed it

I've been doing pour over for about 2 years now, mostly just guessing at my grind size and water temp. My friend who works at a shop in Portland watched me brew last Saturday and said, "Your pours are way too aggressive, you're basically stirring the bed with that stream." I laughed it off at first, but then he showed me his technique, keeping the kettle spout like 2 inches from the coffee and pouring super slow, barely breaking the surface. First cup after that was night and day, sweeter and way less bitter. I felt dumb that something so simple was messing with my morning routine for 24 months. Has anyone else had a pro point out a basic flaw that changed everything for you?

Bet the water temp was compensating, not the pour.
