Hot take: cold brew concentrate is overpriced flavored water
I overheard a guy at a shop in Portland last Tuesday tell his friend that cold brew has 'more caffeine and smoother taste, so it's worth $7 a cup.' I tried to stay quiet but I had to speak up. I've been brewing my own cold brew at home for 2 years, and the difference is mostly marketing. I use a $15 mason jar, a cheap mesh filter, and coarse grounds from the local roaster. It takes 18 hours and tastes just as good as the $7 stuff, maybe better because I control the ratio. What gets me is people acting like paying triple for the same beans is some kind of upgrade. Has anyone else done a side by side blind taste test and felt fooled by the cafe premium?
