Bought my first real burr grinder at a shop in Austin 3 years ago and I still think about the old blade one
About 3 years ago I walked into a little coffee shop in Austin and the guy behind the counter talked me into a burr grinder after I complained about bitter cups for months. Before that I was using a $20 blade grinder from a big box store and I truly thought it was fine, just noisy and a little messy. He ground the same beans both ways and had me smell them, and the difference was not small. The blade one smelled sharp and burnt, the burr one smelled like chocolate and orange, and I stood there feeling a bit silly. Last week I pulled out that old blade grinder to crush some spices and the smell brought it all back. My morning cup has been steadier ever since, same beans, same water, just a more even grind. I keep wondering how many people are still fighting their blade grinder and blaming the beans, so what finally made you switch?
