A barista in Austin told me my $600 grinder was making my coffee worse, and I think he's right
I was in Austin last weekend visiting my sister and we stopped at this tiny cafe on South Congress. The guy behind the counter watched me order a pour over and somehow we got talking about gear. I mentioned I dropped $600 on a flat burr grinder last year, thinking I was finally doing it right. He just smiled and said, "You probably upgraded past your beans." I laughed it off at first but then he explained that most people buy cheap beans and a fancy grinder, so they're just grinding bad coffee more evenly. That hit me hard because I buy whatever is on sale at the grocery store most weeks. I went home and grabbed a bag from a local roaster for $22, same grinder, same method, and it was a totally different cup. So now I'm wondering if I've been wasting money on hardware this whole time. Has anyone else had a barista call out their setup like that?
