TIL that converting RGB to CMYK in Photoshop with the wrong profile cost me 50 prints

I mean, everyone says to just use US Web Coated (SWOP) v2 but my greens kept coming out muddy. So I tried a different approach last month - I converted using a custom profile I built from my local print shop's specs. Took about 3 hours to calibrate but the test run of 50 business cards came out almost identical to screen. Maybe it's just me but I think the one-size-fits-all profiles are overrated. Has anyone else had luck matching a specific printer's output instead of guessing?
