Talking to a sign shop guy made me realize I've been soft-proofing wrong for years
Was getting some banners printed at a local shop in Denver last Tuesday and the owner asked how I proof my colors. He said soft-proofing on my tablet is useless because the backlight tricks my eyes, and I should be using a printed reference under a 5000K lamp instead. Has anyone else had better luck matching prints by changing their proofing setup?

Honestly, I see it a bit differently. I get the 5000k lamp thing helping with matching paper to screen, but soft-proofing on a tablet isn't useless if you calibrate it right and trust your eyes. Ngl, a backlit screen can actually show you shadow details a printed reference will just crush.

Funny enough I used to calibrate my monitors for print work by eye and just accepted whatever came out. Then I switched to a cheap little desktop lamp with a 5000k bulb and it made a HUGE difference in matching my screen to paper. Now I just use the lamp for everything, even regular proofing.
