PSA: the $12 color checker card saved my print job but the $200 monitor calibration kit is what I actually needed
I run a small screen printing thing out of my garage in Sacramento and last fall I dropped $200 on a monitor calibration kit after a run of shirts came out looking like mud. The kit fixed my screen so what I saw was finally what the printer spat out, but the $12 color checker card I grabbed at the same time is what I use every single day now to set white balance before I even touch the files. Problem is I bought a cheap CMYK guide off a site I won't name for $35 and the swatches were so far off from my Pantone book that I wasted a whole weekend chasing a green that does not exist on fabric. Two hundred bucks on the calibration kit was money well spent, the $35 guide was a straight up lie, and the free color profiles from the printer's site ended up being the real fix. Has anyone else had luck with those cheap checker cards or do you all swear by the expensive ones?
